Atlanta, Georgia – Richard “Rick” Reiter joined Wiggam Law, an Atlanta law firm that practices only tax law, as a senior attorney in early October. Prior to joining Wiggam Law, Rick was a solo practitioner and owned Reiter Tax Law, PLLC in Mt Juliet, Tennessee. Before opening his own firm, Rick led the tax controversy practice at a top-eight national accounting firm.
Rick has practiced law for more than 24 years and has focused his practice on tax law since 2012. He has appeared as counsel in more than 300 cases before the U.S. Tax Court, representing taxpayers and, earlier in his career, the IRS.
He is an experienced tax litigation attorney and handles tax disputes from beginning to end, including federal and state audits, appeals before the IRS Independent Office of Appeals, and litigation in U.S. Tax Court and federal district court. He has litigated cases involving conservation easements, partnerships, research and development credits and microcaptive insurance. He has also negotiated federal and state offers in compromise and installment agreements for people facing collection, and argued for penalty abatement on behalf of hundreds of taxpayers.
That background lines up closely with Wiggam Law’s caseload. The firm represents investors in syndicated conservation easement disputes, business owners facing payroll tax and trust fund recovery penalty issues, and individuals and companies that owe money to the IRS or the Georgia Department of Revenue.
“Rick has argued in Tax Court for taxpayers and for the government, so he knows how the IRS builds a case because he used to build them,” said Jason Wiggam, founding partner of Wiggam Law. “Conservation easements and payroll tax penalties are a big part of what we do, and he has litigated those exact issues. When a case can’t be resolved at the negotiating table, our clients now have one more attorney ready to take it to court.”
Reiter said joining Wiggam Law made sense because of the firm’s tax focus and the ability to offer his clients the advantages of working with a larger firm. “There’s only so much one attorney can take on,” Reiter said. “Wiggam Law’s tax expertise was an opportunity to join a dynamic team, expand the services available to my clients and focus my practice on more complicated tax litigation matters. It was an easy decision from every perspective.”
At Wiggam Law, Reiter will handle audit defense, appeals and Tax Court litigation for clients in Georgia and across the country.
Reiter earned his law degree with honors from The George Washington University Law School and a master of laws in taxation, with distinction, from Georgetown University Law Center.
