Calgary October Prostate Cancer Support Meeting on CAR-T Research Announced

Oct 7, 2026

Prostaid Calgary has announced its October prostate cancer support meeting, offering attendees a closer look at why promising CAR-T cells sometimes fail before treatment even begins—and what researchers are learning from those failures.

-- Prostaid Calgary has announced its October prostate cancer support meeting, taking place on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at the CKE Community Centre in Calgary, Alberta, and online via Zoom. The gathering will feature a presentation on CAR-T cell manufacturing failures and current cancer immunotherapy research, giving patients, families, caregivers, and community members an opportunity to learn about developments in cancer science.

More information about the October meeting is available at https://prostaid.org/meetings/

The meeting comes as Prostaid Calgary continues to update its educational programming around developments in cancer research and care. The Canadian Cancer Society estimates that 29,300 men in Canada will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2026, representing 23% of all new cancer cases among men and reinforcing the importance of accessible opportunities to learn about evolving cancer research and treatment.

The October presentation will be led by Haylee Robertson, an MSc trainee in the Hay Lab at the University of Calgary’s Riddell Centre for Cancer Immunotherapy. Her research investigates T-cell factors associated with manufacturing failures of patient-derived autologous CAR-T cells, with the goal of better understanding why some cells cannot be successfully produced for treatment.

CAR-T therapy works by collecting a patient’s T cells and genetically modifying them so they can recognize and attack cancer cells. University of Calgary researchers report that CAR-T therapy has demonstrated success in blood cancers, but the manufacturing process can fail in approximately 1% to 13% of cases, potentially delaying treatment, wasting resources, and increasing costs.

Prostaid Calgary’s monthly meetings are free and require no advance registration, creating an accessible setting where attendees can hear from medical or healthcare speakers, ask questions, and connect with others affected by prostate cancer. Meetings generally take place once a month and cover topics relevant to cancer research, treatment, health, and the prostate cancer journey.

The organization also supports specialized Warriors and Wives & Caregivers meetings each month. These groups provide dedicated spaces for people dealing with advanced prostate cancer and for wives, partners, and caregivers supporting loved ones through diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care.
